Job Security?
General Douglas MacArthur said that “there is no such thing as security on this earth, only opportunity.”
I think he is correct. The closest thing you can get to security this side of the grave is found in how faithful you are to opportunities set before you. The more faithful to opportunities, evidenced by the ability produce, the more likely you are to have security. Maybe not job security but, employment security for sure.
If you’re asking “what’s the difference?”, let me briefly explain.
As a business owner I am always looking for great talent to help me and the company become better. If circumstances arise where I am placed in a position to downsize based on economic circumstances, certain good employees may have to find employment elsewhere. The employee that had an impeccable work record, who always gave his best and never missed a day of work, will likely get a strong letter of recommendation.
In addition, business owners talk with other business owners, managers talk with other managers, and HR people talk with other HR people. The employee with an excellent tarck record will have an advantage over those who do not.
The bottom line is that security in the marketplace is determined by your ability to produce. If you can produce $2 and it only costs the business $1 to hire you, they would be foolish to let you go. If you want to raise your job security and increase your likelihood of securing a new job when situations change, provide more and more value to the company and make your immediate supervisor look really, really good. Those two actions will swing the odds in your favor to increase job AND employment security.
Look at Lebron James in the NBA. Do you honestly believe that he would have trouble finding a job if the Cleveland Cavaliers “went under?” I don’t think so either. It is his ability to produce that makes him highly valuable to his teammates, his coach and the owner.
It’s tough out there right now. The country has some problems, and individuals will work through them, regardless of what the politicians do. It is still the greatest country in the world. After all 15,000,000 illegal immigrants can’t be wrong can they?
Plan your work and then work your plan. Remember what Peter Drucker said, “Plans are only good intentions unless they immediately degenerate into hard work.”
