Cut Costs, Yes. But, NOT Your Gym Membership!
If you are like me you have been looking for ways to cut costs and preserve your bottom line. Just don’t let too much cutting destroy a different kind of “bottom.”
One of the “line items” that is often eliminated is the gym membership. If you are not using it, then by all means get rid of it. But, if you are using it, let me share with you a few reasons why cutting that may not be a good idea.
1. Relieve stress.
In this economy and trying economic times, a healthy outlet like working up a sweat and taking frustration out on a treadmill or weight bench is very good. It will take your mind off of the situation for a while and at the same time you will be building a better “you.” Your body will release the neurotransmitter dopamine, neopinephrine and the “runner’s high” endorphin. These are the same chemicals and hormones that are released when people do drugs. It is the “natural high” and it absolutely helps with stress.
2. Be Healthier
The healthier lifestyle will actually save you money, especially in health care costs. Those who regularly exercise, get enough sleep and eat right are less likely to get sick. When you are working out and putting your body through the paces you will have a better night’s sleep as well (a harder and harder thing to come by these days!).
3. Have more time
When I first started working out, I thought, “Where in the world am I going to find the time?” Well, it turns out that by taking one hour each day for myself to work out, I am actually better during the other 23. I am more alert, productive and focused then when I don’t work out. I can get more done in less time and have energy to spare.
When all the news seems bad and there isn’t much to stay encouraged about, take care of yourself first and use the gym as a place to start a fresh discipline. It is amazing how a positive step in one direction will affect all the other areas of your life. Those you love the most will thank you for it.
